FINAL VISUAL DEVELOPMENT

Target Audience

I always doubted whether I should create this artwork purely for mum and I or take this as a designer product to remind mothers and daughters of the world.

Eventually, I made up my mind to make this particularly for the relationship between me and my mum and dedicate this artwork to her.


Paper Usage

I found out not all surfaces can go in to the music box smoothly!!!!A layer of transparent plastic is needed to add under the film + the paper I bought maybe not suit!

RESULT:

film strip:

• A layer of light transparent film is added underneath.

2 other strips:

• normal matt paper : failed ( style mismatching with the film)
  
• colour special texture paper: failed (colour mismatch)
  
• tracing paper : failed (not as gd as transparent film)
  
• transparent printing film : success! (One more layer of film is attached underneath each film to increase weight)

Making of 3rd strip - LOVE (film)

I used 120 camera + a projector to work out a slide film which is composed of the memory between me and my mum. As I think we have the sweetest time around 10 - 15 years ago, and it's nice that me and my mum had a sweet long distance phone talk after I asked her to find me some old pictures from my hometown.

Then a light box is made for viewing while this strip going in the music box.
Moreover, 2 clear plastic surfaces are made as the bases for the other 2 strips.





















Making of 1st strip - MUSIC ( transparent inkjet film)

Idea a)

I made it originally in rough music book style and printed on normal matt paper, but I abandoned it as I dicovered the style may not match with the film (3rd strip) I printed.




Idea b)

I am asking mum to listen more music in order to ease her sensitive emotion, therefore I made this with the footage of my mouth singing "Que Sera Sera" while I was playing webcam with mum. She sent me the print screen images in her computer. I edited and placed them on my strip.

Making of 2nd strip - FREEDOM (transparent inkjet film)

Idea a)

I made it originally in a colourful graphic style and printed on normal matt paper, but I abandoned it as well because the style may not match with the film (3rd strip) I printed.




For this strip, the message is about freedom. I want mum to try letting me go with love, as I wish her to understand that I can find my way on my own. Therefore I came up with my own route of life. I made it with road photos, google map street view and my own roads illustrations.

MAKING OF MUSIC INPUTS !

3 Music Strips/inputs
(based on the 3 main messages I have mentioned at the previous entry)

1st - MUSIC
2nd - FREEDOM
3rd - LOVE

Each music input/strip has one melody. The 1st one goes with the song, "Que Sera Sera" which is originally a mother and daughter song, but I have recomposed the lyrics with my own story specially for my mum. The 3rd one goes with a random melody based on the graphic I have made.

Vertical or Horizontal?


















Should I do my designs vertically or horizontally?? Initially I thought holding it horizontally like most people do will be the best way to use this music box, therefore my design may have to go horizontal.

However, after some experiments...I decided to do my designs vertically in terms of better display position and better graphic layouts /arrangement of the strips. Holding it like this is also handy and comfortable to play your own selected music!

Those 3 songs took me half day to transfer the music notes from sheet to the given original strips with a hole punch, as I am not familiar with music notes reading :(..but finally done.
Then the marked melody will be transferred from strips to my design ones.

FINAL CONCEPT:

MUSIC COMMUNICATION : DIY MUSIC BOX









































A set of music boxes with 3 different songs + 3 diff inputs (melody strips) - 3 diff messages I want to say.


WHY?

1. I have mentioned mum loves music, music can ease her sensitive emotion.

2. I always think music box is a sweet and warm product for your special one (normally for female), it can be touching and make the receiver think of the memory between you and her.

3. it's handy, it can be placed on mum's make up desk, a corner of the dinning room/table or even in bathroom or kitchen. Also, I think the hand crank always attracts people to play with.

4. This kind of DIY music box can show my deep feelings with my designs on the melody strips and my own selected music for mum. When mum inserted my messages (strips), music comes out through the box. I wish she can read and understand my feelings with a calm and soothing emotion. This is the most crucial point I would like to reach in this project. I am sure mum cant buy this designer product anywhere else on the street, it is an unique art piece for me and my mum.




3 Main Messages for mum :

a) I suggest you to listen music more often than you do, as I guess it is the most effective way to ease your sensitive emotion and stay calm when we come to any disagreement.

b) I desire so much for freedom and space between us. You may think I 'm not mature to cope with problems and may go wrong easily on everything. However, success comes from failure. I would love to manage any big issue and experience any failure. I am sure more freedom comes with closer relationship.

c) I want to tell that I love you no matter what happens. I am still the tiny Ying Ying in those old pictures. I never forget the love you gave me these 22 years. Love stays still forever.



Possible Branding ?























Actually im thinking should I do engraving on the music boxes (metal) and insert these graphic branding typefaces on each beginning part of the melody strips

Que sera, sera?

The old Doris Day song from the 1956 movie, The Man Who Knew Too Much, is a true golden oldie. The song has three quite simple and tight cascading verses forming a woven inclusio around the chorus:

"Que sera, sera.
Whatever will be, will be.
The future's not ours to see.
Que sera, sera.
What will be, will be."

It's perhaps a song of a girl expressing expectant hope as she grows through to womanhood, then into a relationship with her partner, before finally she issues the same 'motherly' advice to her children who're expressing this same expectancy of hope typical of the age. It's a hope that leads to faith; a faith requiring courage to simply let things be.

The song highlights what was in vogue in the era--that of looks and success--will we be beautiful or handsome... will we be rich... will we have the happy ('rainbow') life? So, what's changed? Probably more of a social conscience and possibly a drivenness toward success.

Generation Y people might even want the right job which holds their interest, advancement prospects and perks without having to do some of the hard yards.

Whatever we're facing in life it really does take faith to let things be. Whatever was, was; whatever is, simply is; whatever will be, will be--whether we like it or not.

It's the acceptance of faith that underpins this attitude. Whatever we hope for it's in faith's hands entirely. We can't bring it to pass any earlier even if we try.

We are best to hope and be expectant, but we must know the limits of hope. Wishing won't get us there, though we're destined to achieve a number of our goals, corresponding with the work and talent we put in.

Diligence and prudence toward personal mastery is the key to making our dreams reality.

2nd STAGE DEVELOPEMENT:

Dear Mum,

You used to be my only enemy and never let me be free. Catching me in places that I knew I shouldn’t be. Back then I didn’t know why. So I see through your eyes, all that you did was love. But please believe the children, let them lead the way, give them a sense of pride.

Que Sera Sera! Whatever will be will be! I’m not a girl. There is no need to protect me. It’s time that I learn to face up to this on my own. I’ve seen so much more than you know now. If I fail, if I succeed, as I’ ll live as I believe.
